Frequently asked questions.

The first step is to submit a contact form or call me to schedule a free 15-20 minute consultation session. During that call I will ask you some questions to learn more about how I can support you reaching your goals. I will also answer questions you might have. There are no forms to complete, no cost, and no pressure. If you do want to move ahead, we will find a time for a more in-depth intake appointment as our next step.

The quality of your relationship with your therapist is one of the most important factors in predicting the benefit of therapy. If something isn't working or your needs aren't being met, let’s talk about it. Sometimes the things that come up in therapy (e.g., feeling misunderstood) are the same kinds of things that come up in other important relationships and we can address them together.
However, if we’ve tried that and something just isn't working, that is okay. I will provide you with referrals to another therapist who could be a better fit. Supporting you reaching your goals is what is most important to me.

Early in our work together, we will identify your goals for therapy and will develop a treatment plan that we will review routinely.
Assessment tools will be used to help measure changes in the parts of your life you want to change (e.g., symptoms of PTSD or depression). We will discuss your scores on the assessment tools periodically to review your progress toward your goals and make changes to your treatment plan to help you stay on track.
Although the scores are important and can be helpful, they will be used only in combination with your own reflection on the changes you are making and how you are feeling.
Also, if you cry during sessions you will know it's helping (okay, not really … but crying does sometimes happen and, when it does, it tends to be a good thing).

Session length depends on the type of treatment you're doing. For instance, most individual sessions are 50 minutes. Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure Therapy sessions are 60 minutes. Couples sessions range from 60-90 minutes. Fees are determined by session length.

Life happens. Occasionally needing to cancel or reschedule sessions is understandable. Because the time you have scheduled is reserved specifically for you, it is important to provide as much notice as possible when you need to make a change.
Cancelations more than 48 hours in advance will not be billed.
Cancelations between 1 and 48 hours before the scheduled appointment time will be billed at the full rate.
Not showing for an appointment without prior notification will be regarded as a cancelation with less than 48 hours notice and will be billed at the full rate.
If you cancel/do not arrive to two appointments in a row or more than three appointments during your course of care, a phone consultation will be required before an additional appointment will be scheduled.

I am an out-of-network provider, which allows us to prioritize your clinical needs over insurance constraints. I can provide a detailed receipt (i.e., a Superbill) and help you navigate your benefits to maximize your reimbursement.
